Los Angeles 2028 will mark the third appearance of 3x3 basketball in the Olympic Games. The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has confirmed four additional teams per gender, and they have updated the qualification system for teams within the discipline.
As the host nation, USA will be automatically qualified. However, both the USA men’s team and women’s team took home major wins at the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2025 on November 30, 2025. In the finals, they defeated Puerto Rico and Canada accordingly—both faceoffs were a repeat of the 2024 finals.
This year, the Olympic Games will host an expanded roster of twelve 3x3 basketball teams per gender, which is a seismic increase compared to the previous eight per league. This means, aside from USA’s guaranteed qualification, an additional eleven places are available for both women’s and men’s teams. This change reflects the building momentum behind 3x3 basketball and the traction it has gained over recent years.
This expansion also allows greater opportunities for national representation than ever before—and at the apex of athletics! The enthusiasm for this exciting, innovative urban discipline has increased drastically since its Olympic Games debut in Tokyo, Japan, in 2020.
Five teams per gender can earn Olympic berths appointed by the FIBA 3x3 Federation Ranking. These teams will be selected based on their standings as of December 1, 2027. Qualification will follow a regional allocation model; there will be one top-ranked team from each gender awarded to Africa, the Americas and Europe. Two teams of each gender will hail from Asia-Pacific, with one spot guaranteed to an Asian nation per gender.
As of December 2025, the FIBA Central Board changed the 12-month Federation Ranking window to a 24-month period. The purpose of this change is to ensure consistency in ranking from each contending team throughout a qualification window. The remaining six places per gender will be earned through four Olympic Qualifying Tournaments held between March and June 2028.
As the world’s fascination with 3x3 basketball grows, our festival continues to welcome interested athletes of all playing abilities to our courts. Whether you arrive as a professional, vet or rookie, we ask that your sneakers are laced and you bring your game face. See you in June!
