Basketball Takes to the Ice at the Thunderbirds Game

Friday, February 20, marked Eastern States Exposition (ESE) Night at the Springfield Thunderbirds, brought to you by the producer and host site of Hooplandia, ESE. The organization delivered a promotional booth for the tournament and festival, tons of branded swag and a puck drop presented by everyone’s favorite intern.

The stands in section 30 were stacked with current and former members of the ESE family. The Hooplandia Road Show made a special appearance at a table stocked will keychains, stickers, koozies, accessories for Crocs, all-new headbands and more. The promotional booth was staffed by local athletes from Springfield College and Pope Francis Preparatory School, who represented the best of Western Mass.

Hooplandia Intern and Springfield College student Anthony Ardolino had the privilege of dropping the puck on the ice to start the big game against the Bridgeport Islanders.

“When I was told I was going to be dropping the puck,” said Ardolino, “I was shocked and, honestly, nervous at first. I wasn't expecting that when I was walking into the office that day. As the game got closer, I became more excited, and I realized what a cool moment that would be. I was grateful to have that experience and represent Hooplandia!”

The Islanders bring close competition to the rink at the MassMutual Center when they travel from their hometown in Connecticut. After the game spilled into overtime, it was the Thunderbirds that emerged from the ice victorious with a score of 5-4, ensuring they remained in the conversation for playoffs.

With so much buzz around hockey and Hooplandia throughout the evening, it was a win all around for sports in Springfield, Mass.

A national treasure trove of fun
